hannya

Hannya (般若) is a mask used in traditional Noh theater, representing a female demon driven by jealousy, anger, and heartbreak.

@yokai.match I can't believe we haven't talked about the hannya yet! Her name means "wisdom" and the wise understand her multifaceted nature. as a yokai (yurei, onryo - there are arguments for many kinds of hannya for each), she progresses through 3 stages of jealousy: namanari, chinari, and honnari, until her humanity is swallowed completely. #japanesemythology ♬ Chrome Tears - Meï Chan

Likely origins:

Classic 19th-century ukiyo-e woodblock prints, most notably Utagawa Kuniyoshi's famous 1844 artwork, Takiyasha the Witch and the Skeleton Spectre, pictured above.
